AROUND CAYCE, SPRINGDALE & WEST COLUMBIA

Summer vacation is over, so there was lots more traffic on the roads of West Columbia and Cayce on the Monday morning of Aug. 20. School buses added to the traffic as students returned to school.

One of the most-congested areas of town was Sunset Boulevard in West Columbia, where the new Riverbank Elementary School opened. Vehicles were backed up for blocks at Cougar Drive. Northside Middle School and Riverbank are both on Cougar.

The people of Cayce and West Columbia had something to do last Friday as the Airport Eagles and Brookland-Cayce Bearcats played at Eagle Stadium. The two teams are crosstown rivals. Brookland-Cayce got the better of the Eagles in Friday’s game with a score of 32-14. But all is not lost in this rivalry for the season for Airport fans. The Eagles get a chance for revenge when the two teams meet again Oct. 26 in Cayce.

West Columbia held a job fair Aug. 21 in the New Brookland Room at the West Columbia City Hall

West Columbia Police Department Assistant Chief Scott Morrison said he was pleased with the turnout of job-seekers. Assistant Fire Chief Marquis Solomon said the response was “great,” with a diverse group interested in working for the WCFD.

Ryan Miles, of the West Columbia Public Works Department, said he was “optimistic” with the number of people interested in working for the department.

Positions being recruited last week were for police officers, fire fighters, water systems workers, Parks Department drivers, Sanitation Department equipment operator, and water distribution code enforcement workers.
