Senator: Protect families at border

A proposed law will keep immigrant families together but make them report to court.

Republican US Sen. Lindsey Graham has introduced a bill to prohibit family separation and resolve cases.

“My goal is to make sure families are not separated, but prevent rampant abuse of ‘catch and release’ where people are being released who never show up for their court date,” he said.

Graham’s bill will:

• Prohibit family separation and protect children at risk of harm by giving the Department of Homeland Security the legal authority to keep children under the age of 18 with their families in residential centers during their legal proceedings.

Children only will be separated if there is a clear danger to health and safety including cases where an individual may not actually be the parent of the child, the parent has a violent history of felonies, or the child has been a victim of abuse or sexual trafficking.

• Appoints 225 new immigration judges to hear cases of children and families caught at the border.

It also gives priority to children and families in residential centers.

• Increases family residential beds and ensures families are treated humanely and fairly.
