Donna Neel has been named as the new director at the Gilbert-Summit Senior Center.

“I am very excited about going into a different spectrum. I will have direct interaction and I want to get to know the members here and what they want,” she said.

Neel replaces Maxine Caughman, who retied after six years as director. Neel has been employed with the Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission as their Fundraising Coordinator for several years.

GSSC members will take a day trip to Congaree National Park this month and Frankie’s Fun Park. They will begin their Senior Sports Games this month, competing at South Congaree, Tri-City Leisure Center, and Irmo High School with members from other centers. Other activities include: crafts, games, health seminars, shopping, fellowship, and lunch at First Baptist and Beulah United Methodist churches.

If you are a senior age 60 and above and would like to join the GSSC, call 892-5745.

Shiloh United Methodist Church invites the community to its monthly “Lunch and Learn” Sept. 11 at noon. This month the topic is: Your Planning Options: Today for Tomorrow. Daisy Harman and Hamp Caughman with Caughman Harman Funeral Home will be the speakers. Attorney H. Hugh Rogers will discuss Estate Planning: The Three Essentials, do you have them? A catered luncheon is provided. The cost is $10. The church is at 1000 Springhill Road in Gilbert. Call Donna Griffin at 359-7586 for info.

Due to late unforeseen changes the 4th birthday party of REFIT dance has been changed to September 11 at 7 p.m. Mary Rowell invites ladies to celebrate the 4th birthday at Beulah United Methodist Church in Gilbert. They will have special music, refreshments and fellowship.  Classes are a donation with funds going to the church building fund. For information, email Mary at mkrowell@wind-stream.net.

It’s popcorn time! Gilbert Pack 60 Scouts will be selling popcorn around Gilbert this month as their annual fundraiser. Thanks to our generous community, their popcorn sales last year were the best they have had. Pack 60 will be at the Gilbert-Summit IGA on September 9  from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and at Keisler’s Store from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Birthday wishes this week go to: James McGlocklin, Aubrey Stalvey, Gail Kingsley, Tim Jeffcoat, Jerald Hancock, Stephanie Hardy, Wayne Leaphart, Diane Gantt, Steven Binkley, Jessica Skipper, Jackie Craps, Ricky Crout, Alan Tompkins, Addie Lynn Evans, Joanne M.
