Gilbert-Summit Senior Center members are being encouraged to think of others and be kind to everyone in February.

“Valentine’s Day is a special day for everyone,” said Director Donna Neel. “We have a tree in the front foyer with blank Valentines hanging on it” she said. “We have asked our members to take one of the Valentine’s and write a kind comment or word of encouragement for another member.”

Several members are making fleece blankets to be given to veterans, and others are making Valentine’s wreaths. The crafters are making wooden Valentine’s to give to Meals on Wheels recipients. The crafters have also started on Christmas crafts to sell at their craft shows.

GSSC members will have a Valentine dance hosted by Gilbert High School students. Members will choose their King and Queen of Hearts on the day of the dance. February 22, members will meet with other senior center members in Batesburg-Leesville for the annual Mardi Gras party, complete with creative Mardi Gras attire. Other activities this month include a trip to Riverbanks Zoo, bowling, shopping, games, with a luncheon and fellowship hour at Beulah Church. Director Neel encourages seniors age 60 and above to join them. Call 892-5745 for information.

Good Hope C.M.E. Church began celebrating Black History Month February 3 by highlighting “The Green Book.” On this Sunday they did a display of actual pages on South Carolina taken from the New York Library Archives. February 11, Good Hope C.M.E. Church will have its annual choir program featuring Gospel and Jubilee music. Good Hope youth will make a presentation February 17 to celebrate African Heritage Sunday with a Soul Food dinner following the regular service. The church is at 1032 Saint Paul’s Church Road. For information, call 892-8737.

Pond Branch United Methodist Church will have a Valentine’s Day Dinner February 9 at 6 pm with lots of food, fellowship and games. PBUMC will have a talent show February 23 at 5 pm. A steak, grits and gravy supper will follow. For information on PBUMC, call 657-5481.

Congratulations to Gilbert High School students D.J. Metts, Kris Phelps, and Owen Smith, who were chosen to participate in USC’s band clinic. They will spend a weekend at USC with 400 other honor band students from across the nation.
