Seniors may get free meal delivery

Lexington County seniors may be eligible for free meal delivery.

The Lexington County Recreation and Aging Commission’s Meals On Wheels program delivers heat-andeat meals to those who are not able to prepare food for themselves.

The Meals on Wheels program has been bringing food to seniors since 1980, but has expanded its services during the corona virus crisis.

To qualify, seniors must be:

• 60 or older.

• Unable to drive.

• Unable to cook or prepare food on their own.

Those who qualify receive 5 free microwaveable meals delivered once a week.

The aging commission added 10 people to the delivery route last week, Assistant Director of the Lexington County Council on Aging Mary Beth Callais told the Chronicle.

While there is currently no waiting list to receive meals, seniors must speak to a case manager over the phone to determine eligibility.

The commission is anticipating additional state and federal funding to further expand the meals program.

Callais said it takes about a week to start receiving meals from time of approval.

Over 500 volunteers deliver the meals across Lexington County. Seniors are asked to place a chair outside so volunteers can leave the food and maintain the recommended social distance.

Volunteers make sure seniors retrieve the meals before moving on to the next stop.

To find out more information and see if you qualify, call the commission’s main number at 803-356-5111 and visit www.lcrac.com .
