Shepherd’s Center honors volunteer

The Shepherds’ Center of Lexington held its annual membership meeting on June 8 at Lexington United Methodist Church. Kay Mitchell, chair, called the meeting to order followed by Pastor Ken Owens giving the invocation. Others in the program were Dave Smith and Ruth Arant. Numerous door prizes were awarded to attendees before a delicious lunch was served.

Named Volunteer of the Year was chair Kay Mitchell, who has served tirelessly and faithfully since its beginning. Serving on the board of Directors besides Kay are Sandy Olson, Vicky Caldwell, Ruth Arant, Daisy Harmon, Nancy Lipski, Jay Martin, Susan Milton, Tom Paige, Teresa Player, Joyce Romero, Michelle Brown Richardson, and Dave Smith. Watch for news of the fall Adventures in Learning running Sept 27 through Nov 1. You will want to enroll.

Summer has arrived and there are activities and events right here in Lexington that you can enjoy!

Our Lexington County Public Library is kicking off its annual Summer Reading Program for kids of all ages. The theme is “Libraries ROCK.” There are categories like Early Literacy, Kids, Teens, and Adults. Children and teens can be rewarded with treats from local restaurants as well as a book. They can also earn a summer reading medal and ticket to a Lexington County Blowfish baseball game. The entire family can join in the fun. Lexington offers Ice-house Amphitheater events. On June 15 is Movies in the Park – Super 8. and June 22 is The Greatest Showman. A tribute to Tom Petty is June 28 and the 246th Army Band June

What about a trip to our outstanding Riverbanks Zoo and Garden? The big attraction presently is the new baby gorilla born June 4. Members and guests will have the chance to see the baby and the entire troop on your next trip there. In the meantime, check out the Riverbanks Zoo cam 4:30-7:30 each evening as the gorilla family settles into its evening routine. A baby gorilla is a significant milestone so plan a visit!
