Some school meal prices going up

Students in 2 Lexington County school districts will pay more for lunch.

District 1 in Gilbert, Lexington and Pelion plans 10 cents more for meals. Breakfast is proposed rise to $1.50 and lunch from to $3, district spokesperson Mary Beth Hill said.

District 1 will offer free and reduced price meals for children under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program.

Batesburg-Leesville students in District 3 will pay 5 cents more for lunch starting in August.

Primary school lunch will rise to $2.50 and to $2.65 at the other schools.

“Breakfast will stay at 75 cents for our middle and high schools, and will be totally free at our primary and elementary schools,” district spokesperson Mackenzie Taylor said.

District 2 in Cayce and West Columbia plans no price increase, district spokesperson Dawn Kujawa said.

District 4 students in Gaston and Swansea will continue to enjoy free meals.

District 4 participates in the federal Community Eligibility Provision, a meal option for schools in low-income areas, district spokesperson Lisa Ingram said.

CEP allows the nation’s highest poverty schools and districts to serve breakfast and lunch without cost to their students’ families.

District 5 in Chapin, Dutch Fork and Irmo is taking part in the CEP to provide free and reduced-price meals, district spokesperson Katrina Goggins said.
