Start ‘em voting young

Students in Nicole Williams’ and Megan Lemox’s Early Childhood Center class voted this week.

University of South Carolina intern Mattie Amsler taught a lesson about what it means to vote using the popular children’s book “Duck for President” by Doreen Cronin.

Students learned about the electoral college and rules that go along with it. They also learned how people in the United States practice their civic duty.

After reading the book, students voted. One at a time, each student entered the voting booth and completed their ballot. They placed them in the ballot box and received an “I Voted” necklace.

Students then wrote about who they voted for. The votes were counted with the class to determine the winner, and Duck won.

The class discussed the character and setting elements of the story and created red, white and blue bracelets to remember their voting experience.
