Summer workout precautions

The summer months offer an opportunity to get exercise in some fun and interesting ways.

Rather than being stuck on a treadmill inside of a gym, an early morning walk or run is a nice way to get some fresh air and change of scenery.

Another great way to switch things up is to take advantage of our natural resources and try stand up paddle boarding (SUP) or kayaking on Lake Murray or one of the rivers in our area.

There are a number of local companies who rent equipment and provide training if you’ve never tried water sports. A few other outdoor options for getting your exercise include tennis, biking, swimming, and hiking.

If you do get outside for some exercise, an important thing to keep in mind is how the summer heat affects your body.

Heat-related illnesses are more likely to affect folks who have lower levels of fitness as well as children and the elderly.

While people who have higher levels of fitness tend to handle the heat better, everyone should ensure that they are adequately hydrated. The body’s mechanism for staying cool is sweating, so replacing lost fluids is critical.

Heat-related illnesses are nothing to fool around with and can be quite serious. A few warning signs to pay attention to include:

• headache,

• nausea,

• dizziness/tunnel vision.

You should also note any muscle cramping, heavy sweating vomiting or cool, wet skin. Steps to take if you should experience these symptoms are to hydrate, elevate legs, move out of the sun & heat and possibly seek medical attention.
