We have a huge problem with obesity in our country. The most recent information from the National Center for Health Statistics confirms this with the following information:
• 70% of Americans are overweight with 40% of them classified as obese.
• Folks in the 40-59 age range make up most of the 40% who are classified as obese.
• Obesity rates in our young people are shockingly high:
• 13.9% of 2-5 year olds are obese
• 18.4% of 6-11 year olds are obese
• 20.6% of 12-19 year olds are obese
Clearly, something has got to change. As a fitness professional, I look at these statistics and know that in addition to helping folks embrace healthier eating habits, we have to get people moving A LOT more.
Starting to exercise can be difficult for a lot of people. It can be especially challenging for someone who is significantly overweight for even more reasons. I encourage these folks to just get started.
• Go for a short walk today.
• Find a workout buddy and help each other to do it even when you don’t want to.
• Gradually try doing a little more – even when you don’t feel like it.
• Hire a good trainer to help get you started and design a plan to get you moving more without causing an injury.
The big secret to improving your health and actively living life is to just do SOMETHING and get started. If you wait until you feel like exercising, you will never make it happen consistently. Taking that first step is the hardest, but it will get easier; just keep moving.
