3 Lexington teachers honored by state treasurer

Three teachers from the Lexington-Richland Five School District have become qualified to be South Carolina Financial Literacy Master Teachers.

Ghislane Nsangou from Irmo High School, Melanie Barker from FIVE High and Middle School and Tiffany Hutchinson from Spring Hill High School are all qualified master teachers at the bronze level.

Nsangou, Barker and Hutchinson were part of a group of 26 teachers from across the state who completed the program.

The program was started at the beginning of 2020 to increase the number of teachers who incorporate personal finance education in their classrooms at the K-12 level.

To complete the program, “applicants must complete certain professional development classes, as well as create and teach professional development training for their peers. Applicants must also pass the W!SE Personal Finance Certification Test for Educators,” the press release said.

State Treasurer Curtis Loftis congratulated this year’s cohort.

“The knowledge they have gained from this program is important for preparing young students for the future. We value their efforts and wish them continued success as they move through the Master Teacher Program,” he said in the press release.

150 students graduate from Lexington Two adult education program

150 students graduated with either their GED or high school diploma from the Lexington School District Two adult education program and many of these students walked across the stage during a ceremony held at the Lexington Two performing arts center.

“The adult education staff members are so proud of our students and their accomplishments. Many of our students juggle family and work obligations along with their school work. The perseverance and determination in our students makes us work harder for them,” director of the program Christy Henderson said in the press release.

The adult education program provides courses for free or a nominal fee in some instances that include GED preparation and high school diploma completion.

The program also offers ESOL classes and additional support for graduates such as a college and career navigator to help assist with the transition to higher education, the workforce or the military.

Registration for the August adult education session opens on July 22.

40 Lexington Two students qualify for Seal of Biliteracy

Forty Lexington Two School District juniors and seniors have qualified the South Carolina Seal of Biliteracy.

The seal is an award given by the South Carolina State Department of Education “that recognizes students who have attained proficiency in English and another language by graduation,” the press release read.

The students tested in either bronze, silver or gold depending on their mastery level. The languages students achieved the seal in are Spanish, Chinese, French, German, Italian and Latin.

The Seal of Biliteracy will appear on a senior’s diploma or a separate certificate.

Lake Murray 4th of July celebration scheduled for June 29

The 36th annual 4th of July Lake Murray celebration put on by Lexington Medical Center is scheduled for June 29.

The state’s largest fireworks show will take place on Spence and Dreher Island. The show is set to synchronized patriotic music that will air simultaneously on Station 93.1 “The Lake."

Public viewing locations will be available at the Lake Murray Dam and Dreher Island State Parks. Both will be open until they reach capacity and the public is advised that construction at the Dam State Park will limit the number of parking spaces available, the press release read.

Normal fees will still be in place at all lake park sites, state parks, boat launching sites and marinas. The annual boat parade will not take place this year due to construction on the dam towers.

If the event is postponed due to thunder and lightning then a rain date is scheduled for the next day, June 30.

Crapps fled the scene Thursday night before deputies arrested him Friday morning.

He is currently being held at the Lexington County Detention Center where he awaits a bond hearing and the potential of more charges.
