The forgotten Seminole War

Posted

Many Lexington County residents have served their country throughout our history. A forgotten war that Lexington County residents fought was the 2nd Seminole War of 1835-1842. In this bloody war, the United States fought the Seminole Indians after the government decided to forcibly remove the Seminoles from their Florida reservation.

A Lexington County resident, 23 year old Paul Quattlebaum, raised a company of volunteers to fight the Seminoles in 1835. Quattlebaum’s father was well-known in Lexington District due to his rifle-making skills.

The museum is fortunate to have a circa 1840 Quattlebaum rifle in its collection.
