Time to Honor Our Veterans

Posted

Nov. 11 is Veterans Day. They were honored on Sunday with the annual Lexington County Veterans Parade. On a weather-perfect day, Main Street was a scene of American flags and those in uniform who have served our country. Lexington High School AFJORTC led off the parade followed by Blue Star Mother and a walking group handing out flags.

Our town was represented by mayor Steve MacDougall and councilman Ron Williams. Our sheriff, Jay Koon, was represented by Sheriff’s Department entries. Grand Marshals were appropriately selected — World War II veteran Murray Price and Korean War veteran Hugh Rogers.

Congressman Joe Wilson and two granddaughters rode in a Jeep while greeting many bystanders. Abraham the camel walked the route with his owners, coroners Margaret and Clifford Fisher. There were many Scout troops obviously enjoying being part of this patriotic event. Members of Lexington’s post 7 waved from a colorful red, white and blue float decorated by A.D. Kirby for the occasion. Doris Frye was seen as well as other Post 7 members on the float.

The Lexington High School, White Knoll High School and River Bluff High School bands played much patriotic music to the enjoyment of the crowd.

Sharon Willis and her team organized the parade

Linda Griffith reports: “Unit 7 of the American Legion will be celebrating Veterans Day at their Nov. 13 meeting at 6 p.m. with a dinner for veterans. Reservations are requested. Please call Commander Griffith at 803-359-1278 with your reservation and number attending in order that we can plan on enough food prepared by Hudson’s Classic Catering. A Quilts of Valor presentation will be provided as part of the program for the evening.

“Membership is now open for both the Auxiliary and Legionnaires. We want to thank the Village Square Theatre for their invite to our veterans for their final dress rehearsal for “Little Women.” The crowd was small, but the entertainment was superb. If you have not gotten your tickets to see this production, you better hurry as we are sure this will be the highlight of the season! If you are interested in renting the Legion Hut for an event, contact the Commander for details. 2022 is open for bookings. A lot of work has been done around the Post to make improvements.”

And a quote from Lynn Carey: “Please remember us veterans and the sacrifices we made for you. Please share the blessings of freedom. Proudly wave the red, white and blue.”

Did you notice a chill in the air last Saturday? Coats, jackets and scarves came out of the closet as temperatures dropped to a new low. A sure sign seasons were changing as yard jack-olanterns were swapped for inflatable turkeys and even Santa’s! And that takes us to the holidays! Lexington shops are all dressed with trees and tempting gifts for that special person! Shop early! Supplies might be limited.

Lexington Mayor MacDougall tells us this year we will observe our Snowball Festival from Dec. 2 to 5. Last year, because of COVID-19, it was cancelled. There will be a craft fair, tree lighting, carnival, a carol movie and the Sunday Christmas parade.

Gamecock fans were sharing highfives after their win over Florida Saturday night. The Gamecocks scored the most points they ever had against Florida. Tiger fans were excited over their nailbiter win over Louisiana. Congratulations to both teams!

St Alban’s Episcopal Church is proud of these two members: “Congratulations to Sally and Josh Keiper who both have been named 2021 Teachers of the Year for their respective schools. Sally is a Special Education Teacher at Lexington Middle School and Josh is an Art Teacher at Beechwood Middle School. Lexington 1 is blessed to have both of these outstanding educators in our classrooms.”

There are some proud Lexington great-grandparents in Mary & Jerry Howard! Their great-granddaughter, Cate, and husband, Nick Mongell, have a baby daughter Elizabeth James Mongell, born Oct. 25. All are fine. Congratulations to the happy family!
