Could your spare room make you some extra cash?

If you list it on Airbnb, it might.

The DIY lodging company recently announced that the University of South Carolina’s commencement will represent the largest ever surge of guests to Columbia in Airbnb’s history.

Local hotels fill up well in advance of commencement ceremonies, as parents and loved ones travel into Columbia and surrounding areas.

Airbnb released some safe travel tips for South Carolina College parents ahead of the May 10 graduation:

• Always communicate and pay on Airbnb. Guests should never be asked to wire money, provide credit card information or otherwise pay a host directly.

• Be sure to read the host’s profile and listing description thoroughly. Pay special attention to the amenities, house rules or trip requirements, and the cancellation policy.

• Read the ratings and reviews. Guests can look through feedback from past guests to help find the right fit for them.

• With Commencement events taking place at various times throughout the day, guests should let hosts know if they’re going to be leaving early or arriving late.

• Do a safety check. Make sure to know where emergency equipment and first aid kit are located.

• If anything isn’t right, reach out. Airbnb provides 24/7 assistance in 11 languages to help with things like rebooking and refunds.
