Voters oust District 5 leaders

New members expected to form majority

A tsunami of change for the District 5 board came last week.

Irmo and Chapin voters elected 3 new board members.

Catherine Huddle, Rebecca Hines and Matt Hogan will replace incumbents, former board chair Robert Gantt, board chair Michael Cate and Beth Hutchinson.

Former board member Jondy Loveless said, “This is a whole new day for District 5. All the current officers were up for reelection and new officers will have to be elected.”

A massive grassroots effort was organized by those who wanted to see changes in board leadership.

“There are so many areas that need changing, and different things to closely look into; it will take time to decide what changes need to be done and in what order,” Loveless said.

Newly elected Catherine Huddle said, “I’m excited to be able to continue the journey and work with some great folks who, like me, care deeply about all our children, parents, teachers, staff, and community.

“I know we will not always agree, but I know we will always have the best for all those constituents as our mission.

Said Rebecca Hine, “I can’t wait to be a fresh perspective, common-sense and advocate for District 5.”

Said Matt Hogan, “Seeing people come together for a new voice for our community, especially during these uncharted times, was amazing. I am excited to receive valuable insight from past and present board members to provide a fresh voice for our community.”

The new trustees will be installed at the next board meeting Nov. 16.

They are expected to form a new majority with trustees Ken Loveless and Jan Hammond.

A changed board majority will face several issues.

These include district spending, land acquisitions and the new Amicks Ferry Road elementary school.
