Wagener Fire Dept. faces scrutiny

Wagner’s Fire Department did have bank accounts, the town’s mayor says.

The accounts are being called into question after a breach in security with 2 town bank accounts.

The Lexington County Chronicle and Fish Wrapper has obtained the police report from this breach which has a total of 7 offenses and 6 suspects. The amount of cash listed on the police report is $19,191.60.

Wagener Mayor Mike Miller showed proof of 2 separate closed accounts.

Another account, designated as being the 1% account, is still open.

This account is specifically set up for tax money collected by Aiken County from taxpayers to go directly to the fire departments for equipment and other fire fighting materials.

The account was suspended temporarily, but is now back up and running with new information implemented by the town.

The 1% account is to be used by all members equally, explained Miller.

It is also audited by the Firemen’s Association for accuracy.

Another checking account, now controlled by Aiken County, has local option tax money that goes towards the needs of the town as determined by council.

In the past, council has used the funds to pay off a fire truck and purchase a ladder truck and equipment.

The mayor has questioned council’s use of funds used on LED lights and new hoses for the fire trucks.

After another recent breach in the main public fire department account, the town shut down the account due to fraudulent checks being written.

Mayor Mike Miller states that “Measures have been put in place to protect all funds within the town and Fire Department accounts going forward.”
