“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched-they must be felt with the heart.” -Helen Keller
Do you suffer multiple illnesses? Me, too. My name is Jewel Hull. I’m the bookkeeper here at the Lexington County Chronicle. I’m 29 years old and the mother of 3 children. I also suffer from a lot of health issues - and I do mean a lot. My short list: Asthma, prior pancreas and liver failure, connective tissue disorder, PCOS, deviated septum, gastrointestinal issues, precancerous cervical cells, and allergies to almost everything except pine trees. That’s just to name a few. I realize many people may not know what half of those things are. My goal with this weekly column is to raise awareness of different health issues, so others may feel less alone. I want you to know that you are heard, seen and understood. If there’s a health issue you’d like to see highlighted in my column, or if you just have any questions about health, email me at jewel.lexchron@gmail.com Imagine you’ve never seen a blue sky or heard the rain or a thunderstorm. June 24-30 is Helen Keller Deaf-Blind Awareness Week. Many of us know Helen Keller’s story. At 19 months old, a terrible fever left her blind and deaf. She learned to communicate from her teacher, Anne Sullivan, signing into her palm. By learning to communicate, the world was opened to Helen. In 1904, Helen Keller was the first deaf-blind person to graduate college. She changed the way the world viewed the deaf and blind. South Carolina residents who have deaf-blind impairments can participate in the SC Telecommunication Equipment Distribution Program. The free program provides amplified telephones, TTY’s, speaker telephones, and emergency devices to qualifying residents. Go to www.scedp.sc.gov/ to apply for the program.
