What’s in your dash?

What noteworthy dates would you place on a time line of your life? After your birth date, what other dates do you remember?

If you are like me, you know about when everything significant happened but few exact dates.

Mine would begin with birth Nov. 28, 1956. Next would be Feb. 7, 1965 when I was baptized, June 30, 1979 when I was married, Nov. 2, 2017, when my mother died and Jan. 31, 2018, when my father died.

The only other exact date without research would be today’s anniversary, July 18, 1988, when I began working at Lexington Baptist Church.

The church was starting a Wonderfair day camp for kids. I was given a band leader’s uniform with little hearts on it and introduced as “Dan, Dan the Music Man!”

Every person’s life will ultimately have a timeline of at least 2 exact dates: their birth and death. On a grave marker these 2 dates are separated by a dash.

As poet Linda Ellis wrote, it isn’t the date on either end that counts but how you used the dash. That dash represents all the time you spent on earth and only those who loved you know what that little line is worth.

Is it possible for another dash to be included on our

timelines after the final date?

Yes, according to the Bible, “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have an everlasting dash!”
