Where dreams are born

Spring can inspire golf dreams, especially with all the reruns of The Masters.

This week’s article is going to focus on more of The Masters’ memories. Hopefully, even prayerfully, you can see what actually happened in real life to me and can somehow influence you. This may be a bit of an odd start, but it is the truth and really happened.

I sat in the clubhouse at the Columbia Country club back in 1979 with most of the Krapfel family discussing the round of golf. Mr. Krapfel invited me to join him and his children, Tim and Brad, to play golf on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. To me at the time, the game of golf was fun and challenging. What I began to dream about was the family recreational picture.

I thought it was so cool at the time to see the entire family enjoy a game together.

Mrs. Krapfel actually observed us tee off and had planned to walk with us. He optioned to play with some of her friends instead of watching.

I thought this was pretty unique as well.

As we were playing, the conversation converted into us pretending as if we were playing in The Masters. I remember distinctly Brad and Tim pretending to be the commentator while the other putted.

We got to the last hole, last putt, and each had a chance to ‘win The Masters’.

Both made their putts and both won which as we know, in reality, is impossible. However, this was make believe.

In the clubhouse afterwards, the discussion was just as spirited and influential as it was on the course. The conversation actually led to an emergency 9 holes of golf which seemed like even more fun than the first 18.

Fast forward to April 2017, I was in the clubhouse in a conversation with my son, Wesley, after he won the RBC Heritage.

Interesting fact, many of the “recognized’’ tour winners all over the planet mention ‘The Masters invitation’ that goes with their win as the real coveted prize.

There is no other event in golf that inspires dreaming like The Masters.

“I get to play at Augusta” is what I recall from the lengthy conversational exchange we had as Wesley cleaned out his locker.

On the inside of me, this conversation was just exactly like others that Wesley and I had over the years after a round. It felt no different than the conversation I had at Columbia Country Club with the Krapfel’s 40 years earlier.

It was joy and fun for me sitting in the Harbor Town Club House simply listening and being part of the conversation. Even after a real win on the PGA Tour, the feeling was no different than a joyful and fun day of recreational family golf.

It was all the same.

Guess where the dreams were born?

Guess where the dreams were fictitiously discussed in detail?

If you answered re-runs from the The Masters’ tournaments, you were correct.

Since we are blessed with a lot of family time, why not talk about the game?

Then, put golf into action by either putting indoors, outdoor chipping or find a facility that is open.

Social distancing requirements are easy to follow around golf facilities too.

During an Easter Sunday conversation with Wesley, this is what he said about his about memories.

”Playing the par 3 event with Bubba (Watson) & Webb (Simpson ) was so much fun,” Wesley said.

FYI, the children and family can actually join in with the players while playing.

This par 3 event, played the day before the most popular major championship, is truly unique and adds an incredible element, inspiring memories.

Family fun golf and dreams go together in the spring. So make some memories and take your swing together.
