Kacey Peterkin aims to help change attitudes.

The 5-year-old Saxe Gotha Elementary kindergartener has turned a rotten experience into a mission.

She was the target of prejudice by another child while playing at a Northeast Columbia playground.

From that bitter experience she decided she could make a difference.

Kacey has written and published a book, “We Can All Be Friends,” with the help of her parents.

Her mother, Donna Steele, is a special educator in Lexington District 1.

Her father, Kimani Peterkin, is commercial manager for a shipping company.

Her parents migrated from Jamaica to Lexington County about 7 years ago.

Kacey felt that a book could show more people how to be tolerant of differences and not experience what she felt on that Columbia playground. On Aug. 6, she launched her #WENEEDTODOBETTERCAMPAIGN.

Kacey enjoys everything about unicorns and rainbows “but I also wish that everyone will get along even though we are different.

“I believe everyone can help to make a difference.”

The aim of her campaign is to challenge people to acknowledge their own unconscious biases and make an effort to be nice and see beyond the social and cultural stereotypes that exist.

Accompanying the campaign is a book drive for 200 picture books or graphic novels reflecting tolerance and acceptance to be donated to students in Jamaica by December 2021.
