As the school year ends, kids are out on golf carts. Yes, those motorized 4-wheeled vehicles are found on the streets and highways.

The 1st concern is that if you take this type of transportation onto a street, you must have a valid license to be legal. Yes, you can be written a citation if you are not a licensed driver and are caught.

Children have already been spotted driving golf carts on streets, running stop signs, driving on the wrong side of the road and other traffic violations. If you are caught, you can be a fined several hundreds dollars. You must be at least 16 to legally operate them.

The carts must stay below 35 mph and only on roads where the speed limit is 35 mph or less, only during daylight hours and only as far as 4 miles from your home.

For more on golf cart safety law, please visit the SC Dept of Public Safety website.
