Historical association unveils its plans

The Chapin Historical Association has unveiled its plans for a Chapin Commercial Historic District.

Among them will be a collection of historic local photos.

A final hearing with the SC Archives and History will be in July for the buildings on Lexington Avenue and Beaufort and Clark Streets.

“JJ Casey and I have been at this for 3 years,” said John Thompson, the association’s vice chair.

“CHA has received a federal grant, and the town has pledged $5,000. This is a fully funded project.”

A historical commercial district’s benefits include eligibility for federal and state tax credits to offset the cost of renovations and a plaque stating the property’s historical significance.

Thompson said, “This does not replace any restriction on the property owners regarding the use, maintenance or alterations of the property.”

The use or future sale of the building is not affected nor does it give the public access to private property.

The town cannot restrict the use of the property.

Eric Plaag, founder of Carolina Historical Consulting, asked residents for old pictures of Chapin he can copy and an opportunity to interview those who have stories and memories of the older buildings in Chapin.

Plaag has over 20 years of experience in local historic designation, nominations and evaluations.
