This week’s Athlete of the Week honors went to two athletes who helped their teams capture crucial region wins as the season begins to wind down.
Lexington’s boys and Gilbert’s girls are contending for a region championship and need every win they can get to earn the title. These athletes made sure their teams secured wins this week, moving them one step closer to the crown.
Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek.
Lexington’s Cam Scott had an explosive week for the Wildcats. The state’s No. 1 basketball prospect led his team to three wins last week, including a dominant one over region rival White Knoll.
Scott scored 43 points against the Timberwolves, who entered the contest tied with Lexington as the only unbeaten team in the region. The victory secured the Wildcats sole possession of first place for now.
Later in the week, Scott scored 30 points against Aiken in Lexington’s 105-44 win and followed that up with a 29-point performance on the road against North Carolina’s Hopewell.
Gartmon had strong performances to help get Gilbert back on track and in contention for the region crown.
Gilbert went 2-0 against region competition this week after starting group play with a 37-point loss to Lower Richland. Gartmon was a key factor in the team’s 65-23 win against Brookland-Cayce and 59-30 win over Dreher.
The eighth-grader scored six points and added five rebounds and five steals in the win over Brookland-Cayce. Against Dreher, she took charge and led the team in points with 17 to pull Gilbert within one spot of first place in the region.
