Pair of soccer stars secure Athlete of the Week with clutch scoring

Posted

A soccer player duo has won this round of Athlete of the Week after stacking goals for their teams in important wins.

This pair scored multiple points in the same game for their teams, helping secure a victory. With the season approaching its midway point, the margin for error decreases, and these athletes have stayed locked in thus far.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek.

Gavin Hardwick

Gilbert’s Gavin Hardwick was voted Athlete of the Week after carrying the Indians to victory against their region rival Swansea.

Hardwick had all four of Gilbert’s goals in that game. He scored a hat trick in regulation, then nailed the game-winner in overtime to seal it.

The senior has been the main scoring option for the Indians this year. He entered the week with 11 goals through nine games, a team-high, and added three assists, bringing his point total to 25.

Gilbert is 6-3 overall entering this week but holds sole possession of first place in the 3A Region 5 standings, sitting at 2-0 as the lone remaining undefeated team. That record will be put to the test this week with three games, including two against region foes.

The team was set to play second-place Brookland-Cayce on March 19 before ending the week with a back-to-back on March 21 and 22 against Denmark-Olar and Lower Richland.

Victoria Coleman

Airport’s Victoria Coleman earned Athlete of the Week honors after another week of excelling on the field for the Eagles.

Coleman has been a focal point of Airport’s offense this year, leading the team in goals and assists by a large margin. She has 17 of each entering this week for 51 points this year.

Airport has been one of the strongest teams in Lexington County during the early portion of the season. The Eagles entered this week outscoring opponents 50-7 and had not allowed a goal in almost two weeks.
