Regulator who voted for rate hike opposed

A Lexington attorney who approved SC Electric & Gas rate hikes may be in trouble.

At least one state lawmaker opposes his re-election.

Others want to ensure he continues as a Public Service Commissioner.

The State Regulation of Public Utilities Review Committee screens and nominates PSC candidates.

In May, lawmakers approved a motion to reject 3 nominated candidates for the 4-year seat representing Lexington County in an unrecorded voice vote.

That allowed commissioner Elliott Elam Jr. of Lexington to continue serving until another election is held.

Rep. Gary Simrill, R-York, told Rick Brundrett of the SC Policy Council that he opposed Elam who voted to “give SCE&G yet another rate increase.”

John McAllister of Columbia – one of 3 nominated candidates – told Brundrett that he believed lawmakers who support Elam feared he wouldn’t be elected.

Elam hasn’t responded to Brundrett’s emails seeking comment on this.

Brent Jeffcoat of Lexington, a bond attorney, is making his first try for the PSC.
