Soccer, softball players win Athlete of the Week after leading teams to playoff success

Posted

The lights were at their brightest last week with playoffs starting for most sports. This week’s Athlete of the Week winners showed up and showed out for their teams to keep their championship dreams alive entering this week.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek.

Junior Gonzalez

Gray Collegiate soccer star Junior Gonzalez was named Athlete of the Week after helping the War Eagles advance to the 2A state championship game.

The War Eagles won three games last week. Gonzalez was a factor in all three games. In the second game against Southside Christian, he recorded an assist. In a 3-0 win against Christ Church in the third game he had a goal and an assist.

Gonzalez and Gray will play for the championship May 11 at Irmo High School. The War Eagles are seeking their first state championship after falling one game short in each of the past two seasons.

Lillie-Grace Moore

Lillie-Grace Moore was voted Athlete of the Week after helping Dutch Fork win a crucial game in their district of the 5A playoff bracket.

The Silver Foxes played Mauldin in a must-win match to stay alive in the playoffs. Moore helped lift her team to victory after recording two hits, including a triple.

Moore finished with two runs, two RBIs, two stolen bases and two putouts. The junior has been a consistent piece in Dutch Fork’s lineup this season and has a knack of showing up when the team needs her contributions the most.
