A British covid variant has caused alarm because it spreads more quickly.
Even if that’s true, the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines should work, Department of Health and Environmental Control officials told the Chronicle.
They said they are trying to confirm that.
British officials identified the new version called SARS-CoV-2 VOC last month.
DHEC said nothing suggests this version causes more severe illness or risk of death.
Changes in viruses are not uncommon and can appear and disappear over time.
Scientists and medical professionals will continue to investigate and monitor this new form.
For now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requires airline passengers taking their flight from Britain to the US to show a negative covid test result within 72 hours of boarding
Passengers must have written lab results and airlines are required to confirm the results before the flight.
Passengers without test results cannot board.
Since December, DHEC has been sending at least 10 SARS-CoV-2 virus samples biweekly to CDC for study in an effort to monitor changes to the virus.
The new strain virus does not appear invulnerable to available vaccines.
The virus will likely need to change multiple times to overcome the vaccines’ immunity.
