West Columbia Man to Be Charged for Fatal Thanksgiving Weekend Shooting, Arson

Charges are pending in a Nov. 27 shooting death, and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department credits community tips with helping them get their man.

“Mark Anthony Festus Scheibler, 46, will be charged with murder, arson and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to arrest warrants,” says a release from the department.

The department sent out a press release and social media posts soliciting tips on Nov. 27 after Jimmy Ferney Johnson Jr, 46, was shot dead outside a home on Mac Circle in Lexington. Sheriff Jay Koon was quoted saying a camper near the home caught fire at about the same time as the shooting.

“Based on evidence investigators collected and interviews detectives conducted with witnesses, Scheibler fatally shot Jimmy Ferney Johnson at Mr. Johnson’s home on Mac Circle about 7 a.m. Nov. 27,” Koon is quoted in the release announcing Scheibler’s impending charges. “Ferney also set fire to Mr. Johnson’s camper that was near his home.”

The release states that Scheibler is being held in Richland County on charges from another case and that detectives expect him to be formally charged in Lexington County later this week.

“At the outset of our investigation, we had very little information to go on,” Koon is quoted. “We’re thankful to those in our community who stepped up with anonymous tips. Those proved to be very helpful to us.”

Per the website for Richland County’s Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, Scheibler is being held there for attempted murder and posession of a weapon during a violent crime.
