Newspapers should always be honest.

Fairness and accuracy is our only stock in trade, says a fellow newspaper editor.

The best journalism builds communities by celebrating good deeds, reporting on crime and official misdeeds, publishing dissenting letters and making certain our community’s concerns reach the town halls, statehouse and Washington.

Next week is National Newspaper Week. Without meaning to sound self-important, it is an opportunity to recognize the critical role that small newspapers such as the Lexington County Chronicle and The Fish Wrapper play in our democracy.

Community newspapers provide local news that can’t be found anywhere else.

Why does this matter? In the age of disinformation and “fake news,” local family-owned newspapers are among the few credible news sources.

We help our readers stay informed, hold public officials accountable and report on community concerns from crime in our neighborhoods to local sports and celebrate those who daily make living here better.

We appreciate our subscribers and advertisers and welcome the opportunity to serve you. If you want to become a subscriber, please call us at 803-359-7633.
