Lexington County traffic fatalities spiked this year. According to data from the SC Department of Public Safety, 67 people died on Lexington County roads in 2018. That is 23 more than recorded at the same time in 2017. Richland County, had 44 traffic fatalities, 6 less than 2017. Greenville County leads the state with 74 followed by Spartanburg County with 70. Lexington County is 3rd in the state. Statewide, 962 people died on SC highways, compared to 947 in 2017, as of Dec. 16. Of 649 who have died in vehicles in 2018, 333 were not wearing seat belts. Another 144 pedestrians were killed compared to 152 in 2017. 98 motorcyclists died compared to 114 in 2017, and 19 bicyclists died compared to 16 in 2017.
