Are we over-taxing rented homes?

our reADERS WRITE

Lexington School District 1 is losing an experienced math teacher. Lauren Wiley was quoted as saying she works 3 other jobs as “a tutor, a fitness trainer and a bartender to be able to afford rent.” A huge problem for renters here is that residential rental property is taxed at nearly 3 times that of owner occupied homes. It’s ironic that the parents of Ms. Wiley’s students, who are owners, get the benefits of tax preferences denied her because she does not own a home. Then there’s a quote cut out of The State newspaper which reads: Wiley said she has taught in an 80° classroom for the past few days because the air conditioner broke. Her voice was hoarse from yelling over the whirring of 2 fans in her classroom. She works 3 other jobs but has had enough.
