Talking Points

Memorial Day is the 3rd deadliest for car travel behind Independence and Labor Day.

Are you planning to travel for the Memorial Day holiday?

2 million of us will, according to AAA data.

South Carolina is one of the most dangerous places to be during Memorial Day, a new study shows.

Research website ASecureLife.com ranked the state the 6th most dangerous state for Memorial Day travel based on fatal crash data over the past 5 years.

The most dangerous states were West Virginia, Mississippi and North Dakota.

The safest were Maine, New York and Illinois.

Travel delays on major roads are expected to be up to 3 times longer than normal.

Here’s now ASecureLife recommends staying safe on the road:

• Take care when driving at night. Be extra cautious after dark.

• Slow down. Speeding gives you less time to react if an accident occurs ahead of you.

• Drive defensively. Keep extra distance from other drivers, and anticipate having to make sudden maneuvers.

• Don’t drive impaired. Plan for a designated sober driver.

•Wear a seat belt. In 47% of fatal crashes in 2017, the victim wasn’t using a seat belt.
