Bad news for giant waste haulers

They cannot acquire their competition

Lexington County customers of Waste Management and Advanced Disposal Services may need a new service.

Anti-trust busters have told the 2 waste giants they will have to sell their assets here and in 9 other states due to competitive concerns.

The Anti-trust Division of the US Department of Justice has filed a civil lawsuit against Waste Management’s $4.6 billion acquisition of Advanced Disposal Services.

Town of Lexington officials did not expect any local customer inconvenience.

“While it’s something we need to keep an eye on, I don’t expect any more issues than the normal transitions between services,” Town Administrator Britt Poole said.

We have had at least 3 changes in ownership of our contracted waste haulers during contract periods in the last decade.”

The Chronicle has not yet heard from Lexington County officials.

The proposed federal settlement would allow the Advanced Disposal Services acquisition if:

• Both get rid of 15 landfills, 37 transfer stations, 29 hauling facilities, more than 200 waste collection routes and other assets in 10 states.

• GFL Environmental becomes the buyer of their $863.5 million in sites.

Florida, Illinois, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin attorneys general joined the suit as their states include markets with competitive concerns.

Divestitures are also required in South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Indiana and Michigan.
