Do you or someone you know want to go into cybersecurity? How do you get started?

Cybersecurity has many moving parts. Let’s discuss how to break into this fast-growing field.

Your first task is figuring out a primary interest. It helps to choose a role or set of roles that are interesting.

Cybersecurity can include offensive and defensive security, network administration, software development and much more. That’s why it is important to figure out a possible goal. You don’t want to waste your precious time and money on training that won’t help you meet your goals.

1. Trailhead: https://trailhead.salesforce.com/cybersecurity/individuals/

Trailhead shares information about several different possible fields in cybersecurity. It breaks down each role. In addition to describing career and salary prospects, it also offers short courseson skills needed to perform each job.

2. Onet: https://www.onetonline.org/find/quick?s=cybersecurity

Onet covers more cybersecurity roles than Trailhead but doesn’t offer the same level of learning materials. It does describe the tasks and duties in each role. That helps imagine your future in the field.

Look at both sites and narrow your focus. Next week I’ll share some free learning resources to help you reach your dream.
