Posted

Baseball fans will have plenty of Blowfish, Pancakes, Bacon and Bananas to feast upon this summer.

The Lexington County Blowfish, in conjunction with the Coastal Plain League rivals the Macon Bacon and Savannah Bananas announced Wednesday the 2020 Southern Summer Ball Series between the three teams as part of the league’s adjusted schedule.

Although the 2020 Coastal Plain League regular season schedule has been delayed until July 1 and adjusted because of governmental covid-19 restrictions, the Blowfish, Bacon and Bananas are able to move forward with a 40 plus game schedule.

Macon and Savannah, both in Georgia where crowd size restrictions have been relaxed provided facilities take the appropriate steps for social distancing and sanitation, has been approved by local officials to play.

The Blowfish, based in Lexington County, are also working within the safety guidelines and social distancing measures established in their community allowing them to play games this summer with limited capacity. The Florence Red Wolves, along with teams from Holly Springs, N.C.; Asheboro, N.C. and Colonial Heights, VA (Tri-City) have all suspended operations for this summer season.

All 3 teams will be testing players for covid-19 upon arrival and institute temperature screenings for the players throughout the summer following league and governmental guidelines for the safety of players, employees and fans.

There will be a 1st half & 2nd half winner based on best winning percentage with the first half winner (ending July 28), hosting the Southern Summer Ball Series Championship game on Aug. 16.

Blowfish Head Coach Matt Padgett is excited and ready for the Blowfish players to play baseball.

“Our players begin to report next Monday June 15 and we will have two weeks to prepare to take on any and all competition,” he said.

In addition, the Blowfish will take on other summer college teams including the Catawba Valley Stars, Purple Martins and Bombers.

Former Blowfish Head Coach Jonathan Johnson, now the head coach at Columbia International University will head up the Purple Martins and Bombers.

“I want to do all I can to get baseball going again in SC,” he said. “We have so much talent across the state. These boys need to be playing baseball. We have guys commuting from all over the state representing Clemson, South Carolina, Francis Marion, Columbia International, North Greenville, Citadel, Limestone, Erskine, USC-Union, and USC-Sumter.

We have 2 rosters and many of the players went to local high schools in our area such as River Bluff, Dutch Fork, White Knoll, and A.C. Flora. More on the Purple Martins and Bombers will be released later this week.”
