Chronicle Country teams open play in Summer League playoffs

Posted

Despite rainfall from Hurricane Isaias, Lexington and West Columbia managed to open the S.C. American Baseball Summer League tournament this past Monday.

Over at Midlands Sports Complex, Midlands Division champion West Columbia rolled to a 13-0 victory in 3 innings over Richland Post 215.

West Columbia (11-1-1) managed just 6 hits in the game, 2 by Anon Dodds. It scored 8 runs off 5 Richland errors and 3 runs off 2 walks and a hit batsman with the bases loaded.

Matthew Dooley struck out 6, walked 1 and allowed no hits in the win. A victory Tuesday would advance Post 79 to a Bracket 2 final against Florence or Camden.

At Roscoe Frye Field, Lexington rolled past Greenwood 29-7 in 5 innings as it pounded out a season-high 23 hits and scored 23 unanswered runs.

Post 7 fell behind early 3-0 and trailed 7-6 in the bottom of the 3rd when it erupted for 13 runs. The offensive onslaught continued in the 4th inning where

Lexington added 8 more runs.

Chapin graduate Noah Davis and Clemson University signee Ricky Williams of River Bluff each had 4 hits and joined University of South Carolina signee David Cromer of Lexington in each driving in 4 runs.

Fellow Gators Cam Ferrell and Jacob Lebron drove in 3 runs each and Alex McGinty and winning pitcher Travis Elliott of Gilbert added 2 RBI each. If Lexington won Tuesday in Greenwood, it would either play host to Dalzell or travel to Sumter for Game 1 of the Bracket 4 final Friday.

Chapin/Newberry’s season ends

Instead of travelling to SRP Park to start a Best-of-3 series with North Augusta Post 71, the team announced on Twitter its decision to conclude the season.

“Chapin-Newberry is unable to participate in 1st (round),” it tweeted. “We want to thank all the leaders in our state that planned and executed the summer league. It was well run and worth doing. It was about baseball and about our young men. We look forward to Legion ball next year.”
