Dustin Johnson wins event in warmup to U.S. Open

The spotlight will shine on Dustin Johnson as he heads into the U.S. Open Thursday.

The Dutch Fork High graduate has reclaimed the world No. 1 golf ranking,

He will open play at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Long Island, N.Y. paired will fellow former U.S. Open champion Tiger Woods and another former No. 1 Justin Thomas.

Thomas ended Johnson’s 64-week reign as the top golfer a month ago. Johnson regained the top spot last weekend after winning the FedEx St. Jude Classic at TPC South-wind in Memphis, Tenn.

Johnson took a 6-shot victory at the event after a fourth round in which he converted 3 birdies and closed with his second eagle.

It was his 18th PGA Tour victory and second at TPC Southwind and second title won in 2018. He won the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January.

“What a cool way to end the day, to hole that shot there on 18,” Johnson said. “Obviously, a lot of good things happened this week.

“I knew I was swinging really well and I had a lot of confidence in my game and I played really well all week.”

Meanwhile, fellow Silver Fox alum Wesley Bryan finished tied for 12th place at 6-under-par. After three days over par, he shot a final shot of 3-over-par 73.

Johnson is seeking his second U.S. Open title in three years and second career major.
