There’s a lot of thought about the future these days.

For University of South Carolina baseball fans who follow the Lexington County Blowfish, the future is taking place right before their eyes.

There are 6 Gamecocks on this year’s Blowfish roster. All have contributed heavily in the team’s showing.

Their demonstrated, on-field prowess should encourage South Carolina followers looking to the 2021 season:

INF Brennan Milone - Arguably the team’s Most Valuable Player this season, Milone leads the team in 6 offensive categories - RBI (31), runs scored (26), hits (33), doubles (8), Home runs (9) and slugging percentage (.814). He currently leads the Coastal Plain League in RBI and is on pace to break the team record for home runs in a season.

INF Wes Clarke is a solid glove at 2nd base, where he’s only committed 2 errors all season, Clarke’s .414 batting average and walks (17) leads the team. He’s also 2nd in slugging percentage (.724) and on-base percentage (.532).

OF Brady Allen, the Gamecock rising sophomore, has a knack of reaching base. He’s tied with Clarke for the team lead in walks (17). It’s also the same number of RBI to with 18 hits and 15 runs scored this season.

P Will Sanders, a 6-6 freshman, has only 1 save to his credit but he’s made the most of his relief opportunities. In his last 2 appearances against the Savannah Bananas, the Georgia native allowed no runs and 3 hits in 7 nnings.

P Brett Kerry, while making just 4 appearances this season, has held opponents to a .237 batting average to go with 15 strikeouts. Just 2 weeks ago, he and Milone shared in Coastal Plain League Player of the Week honors.

P Andrew Peters, a Gamecock junior, has made just 3 appearances but has allowed just 2 runs and struck out 7. He pitched 2 scoreless innings of relief last Saturday against the Lake Murray Purple Martins.

HOME STREAK ENDS

The Blowfish had an undefeated home record against Lake Murray Cup Series rivals the Bomb Island Bombers and Lake Murray Purple Martins and the Catawba Valley Stars.

After 13 straight victories, the streak came to an end last Saturday. It was the 2nd half of a doubleheader in which the Blowfish fell 7-6 to the Bombers.

University of South Carolina football player Shilo Sanders stole homeplate in the 6th inning for the game-winning run. The loss dropped the Blowfish to 13-3 overall at home and 10-1 in the Lake Murray Cup Series.

Monday’s matchup with the Savannah Bananas was moved to Friday as part of a doubleheader.
