Gas tax triples money for road repairs

Get ready.

The state gas tax is going up another 2 cents July 1.

For 2 years, you have been paying more at the pump so the Department of Transportation can do more work on the state’s roads.

Prior to 2017, the last time the gas tax increased was 1987, Robert Kudelka with SCDOT told WSPA.com

Since the gas tax was raised 2 cents in 2017, SCDOT has collected more than $570 million.

“We have a total of $3 billion in work on the streets right now, but $1 billion of that is coming from new gas tax money,” Kudelka said.

The department’s top 4 priorities are road resurfacing, bridge replacement, interstate improvements and rural road safety.

“Our safety engineers have identified that a lot of the problems we’ve been having have been on rural roads,” he said
