Gator spotted in Cayce

AROUND CAYCE, SPRINGDALE & WEST COLUMBIA

An alligator was allegedly seen on one of the trails near Congaree Creek in Cayce, May 13. Don Vargo reported seeing the alligator and said it was between 8 and 10 feet long.

Two years earlier, on May 13, 2017, Cayce Department of Public Safety officers blocked off an area near the large bridge by SCANA and the Timmerman Trail on the Cayce Riverwalk because there was a large alligator in the area. No word on whether this is the same gator from two years ago.

During the May 7 Springdale Town Council meeting, members of the town’s Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals and Design Review Board were recognized for their dedication and contributions to the Town of Springdale, said Springdale Mayor Michael Bishop.

“Hors d’oeuvres were served before the meeting and there was great fellowship and conversation among all who attended. The Town of Springdale wishes to extend our deepest gratitude to the members of our boards and commissions,” he said.

Board of Zoning Appeals members are Ed Davis, Christie Cole, Walter Shumpert, Joseph Kennedy, and Richard Gadsen. Design Review Board members are Carrie Lee Ann Murray, Wes Lawson, Dennis Wimberly, Ronald Wilbourne, and Lucas Erwin.

Planning Commission members are Jeff Hendrix, Lynn Hutchinson, Keith Driggers, Bill Jordan, and Chris Peake.

Bishop said the collaborative vegetable garden at Springdale Elementary School has been completed. Springdale’s Public Works Department assisted 2nd and 3rd-grade students with planting tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, okra and herbs. The students will maintain the garden.
