Gilbert celebrates festival success

Peach Festival Coordinator Shelba Howard welcomed volunteers to the Peach Festival Success Banquet last week.

The banquet is a “thank you” to all of the volunteers, media, law enforcement, medical and others who work the festival each year. More than 200 people attended the banquet.

Howard surprised guests by serving the specially-made peach ice cream like that which sold at the festival. It didn’t last long, After a delicious meal, Howard gave the financial report from the festival. She said they had sold more ads for the program booklet than last year. This year they also had different groups from Gilbert High School parking cars to raise monies for their many athletic programs. Overall it was a successful festival.

LaReina Taylor, Gilbert Community Park chairperson, was presented a check for $5,000 from the Peach Festival. The money will be used for maintenance and the purchase of items to maintain the park.

Miriam Matthews, recognized the 2018-19 Lexington County Peach Queens. Each of the new Peach Queens talked about themselves and how much they are looking forward to representing Gilbert in upcoming parades.

Jessica Fallaw, Peach Festival Art and Craft Co-Chair, presented the scholarships to the students who had graduated and will be going to college this Fall. Recipients have to work three consequent years to qualify to receive a scholarship. Fallaw said since the Peach Festival began they have given out $125,000 in scholarships.

Gilbert Cub Scouts Pack 60 Webelo and Arrow of Light Scouts are having a barbecue fundraiser. They are selling a plate of Keislers’ wood-smoked barbecue for $10. Tickets can be purchased in advance from a Gilbert Pack 60 Scout. The Scouts are raising money for an overnight trip to the USS Yorktown in Charleston. The fundraiser is September 1 at the Scout Hut in Gilbert. Drive through service will be available and there will be a limited supply of extra barbecue available.

Scouts Pack 60 begins its fall activities August 17 at 7:30 p.m. Scouts will help raise the American flag at the first Gilbert High School football game when GHS will play Gray Collegiate Academy.
