The Big 10 and Pac-12 Conferences take my vote for Zeroes of the Month.

Both voted last week to postpone their college football games and other fall sports due to covid-19.

Big 10 Commissioner Kevin Warren and Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said there was too much uncertainty of medical risks for student-athletes to play.

Warren said the Big 10 may consider football and other fall sports next spring.

This is similar to the proposal Lexington District 1 made to the high school league and was shot down.

I’m not saying it doesn’t make sense in high school but it puts college football up against college and professional basketball and baseball, pro golf and hockey and other spring sports.

Sports fans OD on spring sports as it is. Even our divorce rates could rise.

Heroes of the Month

If the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference think science and their precautions can prevail, what makes these 2 hesitant?

The SEC and the ACC have expressed confidence that their medical protocols permit safe competition.

That means South Carolina and Clemson fans will get to see their teams play, even if not in their stadiums.

Limited seating may be allowed. But even if only 33% get to enter their stadiums, the rest of us can watch them play on TV at home.

The Big 12 has not yet ruled but it looks like they will play. These decisions were made as the result of a power struggle between university administrators, coaches and star athletes.

College administrators are concerned about evidence that athletes who contract covid-19 may be at risk of myocarditis, a potentially fatal heart inflammation.

More Heroes

Many college football stars such as Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence aren’t afraid to play.

Other athletes advocate playing if safety and scholarship concerns were met.

Several Big 10 coaches favor playing this fall.

Michigan Coach Jim Harbaugh told sports writer Laine Higgins his team is in a controlled environment on campus and have reported no new positive cases.

Nebraska Coach Scott Frost said if he and his team had to they could play non-Big 10 teams. He joined Nebraska’s chancellor, president and athletic director in saying they were disappointed in the decision.

Pac-12 coaches have suggested they could go ahead and schedule games with non-Pac-12 teams.

Would this lead to leaving or ouster from their conferences. Who knows?

What do you think about all this? Are they taking too many risks or being just too timid? Write me at ChronicleSports@yahoo.com .
