Life was good over the holidays! Good food, a clean house, family visits, and grandma’s hot spiced tea! I may not make it exactly as she did, but it tasted as I remembered in my childhood days. She is in heaven now, but the memories of those steaming cups of tea at Christmas warmed my heart.

The 1860 recipe for “Yum Yum” cake that I baked is still a good recipe to eat on a cold winter day. Good food is important.

The 10th year celebration of Restaurant Week in South Carolina is January 10 to 20. Take the family out to eat and celebrate some of the really good restaurants we have in our area!

Lexington County’s recycling center is encouraging us to recycle all that paper and cardboard that accumulated during the holidays. Cardboard needs to be flattened, newspapers can be recycled, and remember to remove your name and address on the junk mail before you toss it in the recycling bin. Call 803-785-3340 if you have any recycling questions.

Interested in planets, stars, and astronomy? The Chapin library will have a star-filled time with Professor Larry Met-calf’s program at the Chapin Library January 10 at 5:30 pm. The Irmo library will have Astronomy night January 8 at 6.

Taxes, taxes, and more taxes! The Adulting 101 class at the Irmo library is all about why and how to file taxes! Learn from professionals how to file properly and more on Thursday, January 10 at 6 pm. For information, call 798-7880, ext. 4.

The Irmo library is accepting donations of gently used duffel bags, book bags and toiletries for the foster care closet. Those in foster care sometimes have nothing but a trash bag to hold their possessions. The Foster Care Closet supplies them with toiletries, shampoo, soap, toothpaste and more with a backpack and duffle bag. Take donations to the children’s section of the library.
