How county celebrated Thanksgiving

Posted

Lexington County residents have celebrated Thanksgiving since the late 19th century. Just like today, schools would be closed, residents would spend Thanksgiving with family and friends and many would enjoy turkey.

Local churches often held Thanksgiving Day services and schools would put on Thanksgiving Day programs that featured singing and lectures.

Another favorite Thanksgiving pastime in Lexington was hunting. Unlike today’s traditions, children in the early 20th century in Lexington County would carve pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns. Happy Thanksgiving.
