Swansea’s municipal election will be one to watch.

Mayor Jerald Sanders has been removed from office and charged with embezzling town money.

Interim Mayor Woodrow Davis does not plan to run due to his health.

Council member Linda Butler is up for re-election but has not said if she will run again.

Council members Doris Simmons and Mike Luongo are not up for re-election this year.

These 2 council members charge they were locked out of Town Hall by Mayor Sanders.

They would like town finances to be reviewed.

Town residents wishing to register to vote must do so no later than Sunday, Oct. 3.

Voter registration by mail applications will be accepted if postmarked by Monday, Oct. 4.

Candidate filing for the mayor’s, Davis’s and Butler’s seats opens at 8 am Monday, Aug. 23.

Filing closes at 5 pm Friday, Sept. 3.

Filing takes place weekdays 8 am – 5 pm at Lexington County Voter Registration and Elections Office, 605 West Main Street, Suite C Lexington, 803-785-8369

The filing fee for mayor is $50, and $25 for council member.

Filing fee checks should be made payable to the Town of Swansea.

Candidates are required to file a Statement of Economic Interests and a Campaign Disclosure online with the State Ethics Commission at http://ethics.sc.gov.

Failure to file these documents may result in a candidate fine but will not disqualify a candidate from the election.

At 9 am on election day, the Lexington County Board of Voter Registration and Elections will begin its examination of the absentee ballot return envelopes.

On Thursday, Nov. 4th, at 9 am the Lexington County Board of Voter Registration and Elections will hold a hearing to determine the validity of all provisional ballots cast in the general election.

These hearings will be held at the Lexington County Voter Registration and Elections Office.

The polling places will be open election day 7 am - 7 pm at Monroe Pickney Gym, 607 Redmond Mill Rd. Swansea.
