Is spring break in trouble?

Lexington County students should be extra thankful.

Their weather makeup days will not interfere with spring break.

Students missed school Sept. 11 - 14 by order of Governor Henry McMaster due to Hurricane Florence and Oct. 11 due to Hurricane Michael.

SC law requires districts to include at least 3 severe weather makeup days in each year’s academic school calendar.

District 1 will use the 3 days already designated as severe weather makeup days — February 18, March 15 and April 22.

Lexington County School District 1 Board of Trustees voted to forgive 2 of the 5 school days students and staff missed due to severe weather in this academic year.

School Boards can only forgive a total of 3 days, and only after a district makes up 3 severe weather days.

Other school districts will have makeup days on:

• District 2: Jan. 14, Feb. 18 and Mar. 22. The school board voted to forgive a 4th day missed. No plans have been announced for the 5th missed day.

• District 3: Feb. 18, Mar. 15, and Apr. 22. Lexington 3 will decide the other 3 makeup days in February or early March, said District 3 spokesperson Mackenzie Taylor in an email to the Chronicle.

• District 5: Oct. 8 (already served), Mar. 29, Apr.

22. District 5 board has not yet voted on when to make up the remaining 2 days.

Districts 4 did not respond with specifics by press time.
