A once powerful Republican political consultant waived arraignment in court last week.
Richard Quinn Sr., 74, father of former Rep. Rick Quinn of Lexington, avoided having 11 counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice against him read aloud and having to plea in Richland County.
This is the 2nd time Quinn has been indicted by a state grand jury in special prosecutor David Pascoe’s ethics probe.
Judge Jocelyn Newman released Quinn on a $25,000 bond because Quinn isn’t considered a flight risk or a danger to the community, The State newspaper reported.
Quinn can’t leave the state without permission.
Quinn plans to fight the charges, his attorney Deborah Barbier previously said.
The indictment alleges Quinn intentionally lied and misled a state grand jury about his involvement with state lawmakers, including his son Rick and Attorney General Alan Wilson, both Lexington Republicans.
Since 2014, 4 GOP lawmakers have pled guilty and left office. They are former House Speaker Bobby Harrell, Quinn’s son, Sen. John Courson and Rep. Jim Merrill. A former lawmaker, Republican Jim Harrison, was convicted and has appealed an 18-month sentence.
Charges are still pending against former state Rep. Tracy Edge, R-Horry.
