Keep your immune system strong

We are all taking a hard hit from this corona virus.

Most of us are not used to spending this much time indoors and are going stir crazy.

I have a plan for you.

While we are all avoiding others like the plague, some of us have to come in contact.

This may be due to essential jobs, mail delivery, grocery shopping, etc.

Here are some tips to keep your immune system strong:

• Soak up those sun rays. Spending 10-30 minutes in the sun gives you a Vitamin D boost. Make sure to wear an SPF sunscreen to protect your skin from damage.

• Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds each time. Sing the “happy birthday” song all the way through as a timer.

• Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Citrus fruits such as orange, kiwi, lemon, guava, grapefruit, and vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprout and capsicums are rich, natural sources of vitamin C.

• Get enough sleep. That’s between 8-10 hours for most of us.

• Regular exercise helps as well, so use this time at home to workout. Walk or jog outside to get fresh air.

• Stay hydrated. Drink enough water to replenish what you lose through sweat and daily activity.

• Vitamin B6 is vital to supporting biochemical reactions in the immune system. Vitamin B6-rich foods include chicken and cold-water fish such as salmon and tuna. Vitamin B6 also is found in green vegetables and in chickpeas, which is the main ingredient in hummus.

• Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps the body fight off infection. Foods rich in vitamin E include nuts, seeds and spinach.

• Elderberry-The berries and flowers of elderberry are packed with antioxidants and vitamins that may boost your immune system. They could help tame inflammation, lessen stress, and help protect your heart, too. Some experts recommend elderberry to help prevent and ease cold and flu symptoms.

• Zinc helps keep your immune system strong. Because it is necessary for immune cell function and cell signaling, a deficiency can lead to a weakened immune response. Zinc supplements stimulate particular immune cells and reduce oxidative stress.

As always, check with your physician before trying any new health regimens.
