Lexington honored veterans on Monday

AROUND LEXINGTON COUNTY

Military men and women were recognized for their service to our country last weekend. Monday was the official Veteran’s Day. Churches recognized all military men and women at services on Sunday with hymns and prayers.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 7 honored Veterans with a dinner Saturday at the American Legion Hut in Lexington.

On the program were President Dot Tunstall, who gave a welcome and introductions’, Mary Hazelton, who led the National Anthem, and Vice Commander John Testruth, who recognized the table for only one.

Veterans stood when their branch service song was played by Mary Hazelton and Miriam Lovett.

Following a blessing given by Brenda Podewel, chaplain, a Thanksgiving-type meal of turkey and sides was served.

Post 7, celebrating its 100th anniversary, was captured in a PowerPoint presentation, “100 Years Serving Lexington County.” Mary Hazelton closed the meeting with prayer and a thank you to all veterans who served to protect our nation’s freedom.

Many attended, including Marge Carter, Nila Ballentine, Doris Frye, Doris Reynolds, Roger and Delores Rucker, Linda Roemer, Hugh Rogers, and Jean Testruth.

Our Lexington Main Library hosts an afternoon tea at 2:30 pm on the second Sunday of each month. On Sunday the theme was Victorian teas. According to history, Anna, Duchess of Bedford and Lady in Waiting to Queen Victoria, created the afternoon era of Tea.

The upper class was served a large midmorning breakfast, a very small lunch, and a late 8 pm dinner.

Growing hungry at about 4 pm, Anna asked maids to serve small sandwiches with cakes and a pot of tea to carry them over until dinner time. Thus, a tradition was born!

Join them Sunday, December 8, for a Christmas cookie exchange and tea.

As holidays draw near, we need to remember our neighbors who are in need.

Mission Lexington

is preparing a 2019 Holiday Basket List. It is in need of canned vegetables, cranberry sauce, cornbread mix, canned ham, gravy mix or jar. Any nonperishables are appreciated. Also, warm clothing or blankets are needed for the expected colder temperatures.

Coming up is the Mission Lexington Trunk Show December 5 at 5 pm at Lexington’s Old Mill.

There are so many holiday events coming up! More on them next week.

A correction from last week’s Halloween Costume Winners: First prize winners were Beverly and John Windham, not Barbara.

Mary Alice Lorick sends news of her son, Luke Lorick, who was educated in Lexington 1 schools and is a graduate of the Darla Moore School of Business at USC. He has succeeded in getting 2 days on the National Day Calendar. While he enjoys a successful career with State Farm in Dallas, TX, he is also an entrepreneur. He started a small business, Tailgating Challenge, based on his love of tailgating which began as a child attending USC football games. Luke worked to get National Tailgating Day on the National Day Calendar and we will celebrate the 5th annual National Tailgating Day Sept. 5, 2020. The 1st annual celebration will be on January 1, 2020. Visit his website: 222.tailgating-challenge.com for more information.
