Lexington’s Snowball Festival Looks to Bounce Back after COVID-Altered 2020

If you need a little something to get you into the Christmas spirit, the Town of Lexington can help.

The Snowball Festival returns this week in earnest after a COVID-altered outing last year.

“What a wonderful event this has become,” said Lexington Mayor Steve MacDougall. “We’re excited to have it at the amphitheater. We’re asking everyone to come on out to enjoy it. We’re expecting beautiful weather for it. A little cool, but the day should be perfect.”

The festivities largely take place at the Icehouse Amphitheater in downtown Lexington and go from Dec. 4 to 7.

Walker Brewer, Lexington’s downtown venue promoter, said he expects more participation in the 2021 festival compared to 2020.

“We had a very dialed-down version last year,” Brewer said. “But we’re excited with the attendance levels we’ve seen at amphitheater events so far this year,”

“People are ready to get out and enjoy the season’s activities,” he added.

Indeed, the city is pushing hard for people to attend this week.

“We ask you to come out for the Town of Lexington’s Snowball Festival,” said Lexington Mayor Steve MacDougall in a video appeal. There was also a message from the town council.

“There are a lot of great events this weekend,” Lexington Town Councilwoman Kathy Maness said of the Snowball Festival at a November council meeting.

The Snowball Festival festivities start with a Christmas Craft Fair at the Icehouse Amphitheater Pavilion featuring fresh produce, unique gifts, local vendors, food and more. It goes from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

Also on Friday, from 3 until 6:30 p.m., the town will present Christmas carol singing and a tree lighting. Santa will also be in attendance at the event at the Icehouse Amphitheater to take photos with the children. There will then be a screening of “The Muppet Christmas Carol” at 7:30 p.m.

The Snowball Carnival begins Saturday at 1 p.m. It will feature face painting, balloon artists, letters to Santa, rides and more. The movie “The Grinch” is scheduled to start screening at 6 p.m.

The festivities conclude as the Town of Lexington and the Lexington Jaycees present the annual Christmas Parade down Main Street at 3 p.m. Sunday. Get in the Christmas Spirit by watching a procession of parade floats make their way through downtown.
